O is for Octopus Stew

We learned about the letter Oo and had an O party! The kids each made an octopus (didn't they turn out cute?!)

They worked hard to accordion fold the legs and make sure he had eight of them!

We served "Octopus Stew" (thanks to Amy Eads for her creativity!!)

The delicious dish - (hotdogs with a "haircut", dipped in ketchup and mustard and served with a side of cheerios and orange juice!)

I overheard one student asking another, What is octopus stew?
The first little girl responded, Hotdogs and chocolate chips.
The choral response from the table group? YUM!

All I can say is that it was an interesting combo and my classroom smelled like hotdogs for the rest of the day~
!

Everyone enjoyed the fun and the O party was a great success!

Kindergarten Scientists!

What is science? What does a scientist do?

I asked the kids and these were some of their answers:
*scientists make volcanos, potions, and weather
*scientists like to be outside
*scientists wear goggle and white coats

I love the way their little minds think!

This week we introduced science and discussed safety rules. We talked about the tools scientists use and played a matching game in our classroom.

One of the most important tools kindergarten scientists use is a science journal. Each scientist received a notebook to record what they learn! We visited the science lab at Galatas to investigate the kinds of tools that are available to use. We named them, touched them, and drew them in our journals.

We look forward to visiting the science lab frequently to do investigations and hands-on labs. The kids are excited and ready to learn!

Safety Officer Visit

We heard from special guests to help our students walk and ride to school safely. An officer from the CISD police department and our school crossing guard spoke to the kids about observing path rules, being aware of traffic, and staying away from strangers.

They were an attentive audience and did a great job listening.

We hope that our kids not only travel more safely to school, but also recognize the safety officer as trusted adults in our community!

Huggles' Breakfast

This week we read a story together called Huggles' Breakfast. Huggles is a silly creature who eats everything - including a telephone! The kids loved working with such a funny text. We practiced naming the parts of a book (cover, spine, title page, dedication page, back cover) and reading the words. At the end of the week, we worked in groups to sequence the text and illustrate the story.

Students matched their text with an example to double check the order of the story. hard work!

The kids were so proud of themselves! (I was too!)
